Maintaining a Pollinator Prairie

A well-established prairie can be quite resilient; native species are naturally adapted to the climate, soils, and disturbance patterns. Still, ongoing maintenance is necessary to support full establishment, preserve plant diversity, suppress invasive species, and maintain the prairie’s structure through to maturity.

Prairie maintenance evolves over time 

Maintenance needs change as the prairie matures. Early years require more invention, while later years focus on sustaining diversity and responding to site-specific pressures. In the first three years, the prairie is in its establishment phase. The goal is to reduce competition, especially from invasive species, to allow the native plants to develop strong root systems. This is accomplished through weed management, spot-treating invasive species as they appear, and mowing. Some people may consider overseeding to ensure full coverage, but this is not always necessary. Visible progress may be limited during the early years, as most native species invest in root growth before producing above-ground vegetation. 

Year 4 and beyond focuses on maintaining diversity, continuous control of invasives and dominating grasses, and restoring structure as needed. This maintenance phase will depend strongly on the site’s pressures, soil type, surrounding land use, and weed pressures. Especially if invasive species dominate surrounding areas, ongoing invasive control may be required. Prescribed burns every 3 to 5 years can stimulate growth, recycle nutrients, and suppress woody encroachment. Mowing or haying can be considered as needed. Diversity can be further increased through overseeding as desired.

Monitoring

Consistent monitoring helps determine what maintenance actions are needed and when. Track plant diversity and growth, bloom timing, pollinator activity, and invasive species to allow for timely intervention when needed. Collecting and storing native seed

Collecting native seed is a great way to support prairie resilience and increase diversity within the prairie over time. Many techniques and strategies are available, but vary widely based on species, site, and equipment. 

Seed collection can be done with various methods, including hand-stripping, clipping seed heads, shaking seeds into containers, or using specialized equipment for larger sites.
