Bee Arts

A Collaboration between the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) and the University of Minnesota Bee Squad, Bee Arts is an ongoing commitment to engage and support artists working with themes of pollinators and the environment. Bee Arts is supported by the University of Minnesota Institute for Advanced Study, the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, the Horst M. Rechelbacher Foundation and private donors.

The inaugural Bee Arts event was held in August 2015 and included visionaries who work with bees in art & science. The evening featured Dr. Marla Spivak, Dr. Bryan Alvaraz, author Dr. Mark Winston and artists Juán William Chavez and Jeff Millikan. The Gymnasium artists led the panel and audience through an evening filled with education and entertainment.

Our most recent project took place in October 2015, when a group of leading scientists, poets, theater artists, landscape architects, energy consultants, musicians, paper makers, filmmakers and visual artists gathered to participate in generative workshops lead by The Gymnasium artists' consortium around the topic of Hive. The goal of the weekend was to create an upcoming exhibition at MCAD will showcase the innovative processes and resulting prototypes that emerged from the weekend's collaborations.
